Interior of Magosaburou
The Setting
After it’s successful debut in Hong Kong and Shanghai, this Kumamoto-based Japanese BBQ joint made its foray into Singapore by way of a duplex unit on the fourth floor of ION Orchard. Her modest blink-and-you’ll-miss it entrance tucked in between Enmaru and MeatWorks may not raise many eyebrows, but the marble-tiled, upper deck dining room that features visually-arresting hanging lamps festooned with crystal beads certainly does. Framed by mirrors and ceiling-to-glass windows proffering views of the busy Orchard Road junction, this 80-seat space can easily pass for a lounge, sans the elegant grill griddle-fitted tables.

What to expect?

Magorobouso is not your usual yakiniku joint – it’s serves up BBQ premium beef cuts with a twist. Like Yakiniku Yazawa, Magosaburou features a Japanese-skewed wagyu selection ranging from succulent Kumamoto-sourced rib eye ($28 a portion), prime short rib ($38 a portion) to tenderloin cube steak ($88 a portion), complemented by a selection of Australian-imported beef like beef tongue ($15-$30 a portion). These are served alongside BBQ Hungarian pork such as the Korean-accented chili and miso-marinated Berkshire pork belly ($30 a portion), seafood and sides of salads, rice, soups and kim chi. But where this restaurant defies expectations is with its 10-course Kurohana degustation menu (priced at $180 per head), which may feature an Italian-accented bagna cauda, organic vegetable sticks served with a warm cauliflower cream cheese dip, alongside a parade of BBQ beef cuts such as prime beef tongue with leek and salt and an assortment of prime wagyu in thick cut with prime short rib and prime rib eye. To keep things interesting, the degustation ends with western desserts like tiramisu, chocolate gateau or crème brulee, rather than the formulaic green tea ice cream.
