Ever heard of Mag’s Wine Kitchen? Well, better late than never. Occupying a two-storey shop house space at the fringe of the once-glorious Boat Quay precinct, Mag’s Wine Kitchen is no new kid on the block but a 16-year-old modern European diner that started life as a wine bar in 1996, thanks to the stash of fine wines amassed by oenophile owner, Magdalene Tan, a former forex trader. That Mag’s Wine Kitchen has stood the test of time in Singapore’s here today, gone tomorrow dining scene dominated by a clutch of culinary heavy weights – the likes of Les Amis – says something about its finesse. The two-tiered space runs on dual tracks: the ground floor bistro with woodblock high tables and an open kitchen lures with a rustic vibe while the upper deck is decidedly more formal, if smart, with starched linen-blanketed tables. It doesn’t matter where you choose to dine, the same modern European menu crafted by Tan is available to both at the same prices; as is the 1000+ labels of mostly old world wines stocked in Tan’s on-premise wine cellar.

Sliced hamachi (or yellowtail) is served as a ceviche tossed in an addictive concoction of yuzu and sesame seed oil-perfumed dressing with bursts of ikura (or salmon roe) pearls; while foie gras is marinated in miso paste and served on a mound of julienne apples and arugula salad. While the mains are less fusion, the story is equally compelling. Spears of asparagus in a creamy risotto with Parmesan crisps beckons with savoury morsels of sliced grilled lobster; fork-tender duck confit with heaps of succulent olives and roasted baby potatoes rivals those served at Singapore’s best bistros; and generous hunks of braised pork cheeks with caramelized onions and carrots in a lip-smacking sweet madeira sauce is a pork lover’s dream come true. The desserts of coffee crème brulee and chocolate fondant may not raise many eyebrows but what they do, they excel. If you ask me, Mag’s Wine Kitchen offers honest food that veers deliciously towards contemporary – it’s a restaurant that I wouldn’t mind having on fast dial.
