A stable mate of Eco Gourmet Café, Tamarind Hill by Samadhi Retreats recently debuted in a beautifully restored pre-war colonial bungalow at Labrador Park. Boasting a lofty ceiling in a dignified 12,000 square feet space with wooden floorboards crafted from recycled wood and walls adorned with Thai artefacts, the venue eschews ostentation in favour of contemporary rusticity and the end product is majestic. Diners may opt to dine outdoor at the greenery-fringed terrace or indoors – the latter is mapped into 3 distinct niches: a left dining wing and a right dining wing linked to a stunning central bar island – all peppered with Orang Asli-made wooden chairs made from recycled wood.

 Veering closely to the original Tamarind Hill in Kuala Lumpur, it’s Thai fare too in Singapore but not always as we know it. Executive chef, Thiti Thammanatr, trained in French and Japanese gastronomy before he recently returned to his Thai culinary roots and these influences partially shape his part classic, part modern menu at Tamarind Hill. A dish that exemplifies Thammanatr’s contemporary finesse is the near perfect grilled Australian wagyu (grade 6) crowned with a generous chunk of foie gras alongside green curry reduction. Classics, like the tom yum soup laced with chilli oil and cream, too meet the mark with an intensely savoury concoction beaming with heaps of seafood. If you like your sweets in classic Thai style, the mango black sticky rice beckons though we reckon this dish will fly higher with a drizzle of coconut cream.
