The pizza counter at Extra Virgin Pizza @ United Square

Barely 15 months after setting up shop at Asia Square, Extra Virgin Pizza (“EVP) by the Lo and Behold Group is sprouting an offshoot at Thomson Road. Occupying a corner unit on the ground floor of the kid-friendly United Square Mall, the pizzeria with wrap-around glass windows and calming-green tiled walls offers a trendy alternative to the clutch of local eateries and quick service restaurants in the neighbourhood. Unlike the Asia Square flagship, which offers full table service, diners at EVP @ United Square have to contend with a canteen-style ordering system: order and pay at the counter before you pick your seats at the pizza counter or the dining room adorned with potted plants.

What to expect

The moniker “Extra Virgin” suggests a return to purity. This effort echoes loud and clear in the pizzeria’s choice of core ingredients used in crafting the pizzas and these range from Californian organic Saporito tomato concentrate to Naples-imported flour. Baked in Wood Stone brick ovens – apparently the same type as Mario Batali’s Pizzeria Mozza – the pizza pies are mildly crusty and yield a good bite.

Need a recommendation?

Margherita pizza – best for simple, uncluttered flavours
Pistachio Pesto pizza – it’s bold and a little offbeat
Wash it down with house-made sodas – we suggest the lemon-ginger soda

Meat lovers, we were told, make a beeline for the spotted pigs (S$26) and spicy pepperoni (S$24) pizzas. We, on the other hand, went meat-less: the Margherita pizza (S$16), topped with tomato, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil leaves, gets our thumbs up for its simple, uncluttered flavours but if you’re up for something deliciously bold and a little offbeat, the Pistachio Pesto pizza (S$24) is a crowd pleaser – think complex flavours of crushed pistachio with pesto sauce topped with a crowning glory of lemon vinaigrette-laced rocket leaves and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano. Wash it down with a jug of house made soda (S$15 – for 2 to 3 pax) – the refreshing lemon-ginger soda has our vote.

Oven-fired clams
Caprese

Whilst the pizzas are the main draw, EVP also struts its stuff with some well-made starters that come in handy during waiting time. Highlights include plump oven-fired clams (S$18) basking in a briny garlic and white wine broth and the caprese (S$15), a dish of vine-ripened organic momotaro tomatoes served alongside buffalo mozzarella cheese drizzled with a subtly sweet reduced balsamic dressing.

Brownie sundae

Thirsty for affogato?

Make room for the divine desserts. Of the sweets we sampled, the warm walnut-flecked brownie sundae (S$10) comes up tops, with the affogato (S$8), vanilla ice cream drowned in a potent shot of Papa Palheta’s espresso, coming in at a close second.
